Doug's Educational Background
My undergraduate work began at Liberty Baptist College, Lynchburg, VA. I continued my education at Moorhead State University (now Minnesota State University – Moorhead, MN). I received my Bachelor of Science degree from Moorhead.
My education continued by taking classes related to my profession. While working at Northwest Airlines Credit Union, (now Wings Financial), I went to night and weekend classes through St. Thomas University. I took beginning accounting, cost accounting and managerial accounting. I was very proud of the fact that any class that I took as an adult I received an A for a grade. With my lending and banking experience and my accounting and advanced accounting classes, I became very proficient and grounded in all aspects of finance.
While working at Northwest Airlines Credit Union I went back to college at night. Even though school was difficult while having a family with small children, I was very motivated. I received my Associates of Arts degree in law enforcement from Inver Hills Community College in only seven months. My GPA there was a 4.0.
After graduating from Inver Hills, I was eligible to enter the Minnesota Law Enforcement Academy. I was accepted into the academy into their night program. Monday through Thursday from 6 – 10 pm, and every Saturday morning, I would attend academy classes. My wife and I were building an addition on our house and I was continuing my duties as a reserve officer for South St. Paul. This pace continued for 26 weeks. I graduated at the top of my academy class. I took the POST-test and became certified in Minnesota.
Upon being hired as a deputy for Winnebago County, I was sent to the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy. I graduated from the Iowa Academy in 1994. I have also completed the training and am a member of the Iowa Law Enforcement Intelligence Network (LEIN).
