Work Experience

I had my first job when I was eleven years old. I worked with my cousin, at Kiester Tire and Appliance. To begin with, I was mostly just in the way. But I learned to fix and change all types of tires. I didn’t make much money, but what I did went into a savings for my horse and saddle. Once I bought my horse, I also helped my uncle at his farm doing chores to pay for my horse’s keep. I may have been young, but this instilled a work ethic into me.

My first taste of law enforcement came at Moorhead State University, where I did my undergraduate work. I worked for the campus police as an officer. I also worked for Cass County as a youth probation officer. These both were wonderful opportunities and good training for what later would be my chosen career.

When I was first married, I worked for a credit card company called Shopper’s Charge. This is where I got my first on hand’s experience in a finance position. Shoppers’ was later bought out by Master Card. I left Shoppers and went to work in the business office for Methodist Hospital, in St. Louis Park, Minnesota.

From there I accepted a position with Northwest Airlines Credit Union in 1983. I was hired to develop and head their collections department. I collected bad debts, skip traced people, counseled people to get their lives back on track financially, and assisted them in developing a personal budget. I stayed in that position for five years.

After five years, I accepted a position in the lending department as a Senior Loan Officer. I worked with all aspects of consumer lending. The credit union was a very successful business. They are now over 1 billion in assets. After several years in that position, I was offered the branch manager position in Detroit, Michigan. About this time I had become re-interested in law enforcement. With the support of my wife, I turned down the position and pursued a career in law enforcement.

I worked full-time for Northwest, went to school at night and received my AA degree in Law Enforcement. After graduation, I was accepted in Minnesota Academy. I went to night school academy for 26 weeks. I graduated with honors in 1993. During this time, I was also a Reserve Officer for the South St. Paul Police Department. I worked for S. St. Paul for four years.

In 1993 the position of deputy became available with the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department. I tested and was hired in September of 1993. Since being hired in 1993, I have become a member of the Iowa Law Enforcement Intelligence Network (LEIN) and for the last seven years, I instruct part-time at Waldorf College in Forest City. I teach all classes related to law enforcement there.
